ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI chatbot you open and ask anything. Housefly Concierge is a private assistant you text, iMessage first, built to run one business: it keeps your promises, your clients' debts and your call briefs, messages you first, and asks for a yes before it sends, pays or changes an account.
Disclosure: Housefly is made by Drifted Marketing, and this page is published by Drifted Marketing. Read it as a maker describing its own product, and check anything that matters to you on a call.
Are Housefly and ChatGPT even the same kind of thing?
Not really, and that is the most useful thing to know before comparing them. ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is a general-purpose assistant. You open it in a browser or an app, type a question, and it answers. It is widely used for writing, summarising, brainstorming, explaining a topic and working through a problem. It is built to be useful to almost anyone, about almost anything.
Housefly Concierge is narrower on purpose. It started as Drifted Marketing's own assistant, the one we use to run our agency, and Concierge is the version we are opening to other owners. It is built to run a business, not to make conversation. The question it answers is less "what do you know?" and more "what am I forgetting this week?"
So this is not a contest for the same job. A lot of owners will reasonably use a general chatbot for one kind of work and want something else for keeping track of their own commitments. The rest of this page tries to say plainly where each one fits.
How do the two compare side by side?
| ChatGPT | Housefly Concierge | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A general-purpose AI chatbot from OpenAI | A private assistant from Drifted Marketing for running a business |
| How you reach it | Its website and apps | A text thread, iMessage first |
| Who starts the conversation | Mostly you | Either of you; it texts you when something needs you |
| What it keeps track of | Whatever you bring to the conversation; check OpenAI's current memory settings for details | Four lists: what you promised clients, what clients owe you, a brief before each call, and a read of your inbox, store and ad numbers |
| Acting on your accounts | Depends on the features and connections you turn on | Drafts on its own; anything that sends, pays or changes an account waits for your yes |
| Memory between people | A product used by a very large number of people | A sealed memory per member; no shared brain between members |
| Who answers when software cannot | No team behind your account to take on work | Drifted Marketing's team takes jobs it cannot finish: design, video and outreach |
| Price | A free tier and paid plans; see OpenAI for current prices | Solo $3,000 a quarter or Operator $6,000 a quarter, paid up front; ten founding seats |
| Ads and data | See OpenAI's own policies | No ads; your data is not for sale |
A note on fairness: ChatGPT changes often, and its features differ between its free and paid plans. Everything in the ChatGPT column is deliberately general. If a specific feature matters to your decision, check OpenAI's current pages rather than this one.
What is ChatGPT better at?
Breadth. If you want to draft a blog post, understand a tax term, rewrite an awkward paragraph, plan a trip or get unstuck on a spreadsheet formula, a general chatbot is built for exactly that. It is available to anyone, it has a free tier, and you can start in a minute without talking to anybody.
It is also the better choice if you mostly want to think out loud with something on demand. Housefly is not trying to be a better general chatbot. If that is the job, use one.
What is Housefly built to do that a chatbot is not?
Three things, all taken from how Housefly is described on this site.
It speaks up first. An app waits for you to open it. Housefly sends you a line before you think to ask, when a promise is about to slip or a call is coming up. The example on our home page reads: "You told a client you'd send a revised quote by Friday. It's Thursday. Want me to draft it?" That thread is illustrative, not a real member's.
It keeps the same four lists every day. What you promised clients, what clients owe you, a brief before every call, and a read of your inbox, your store and your ad numbers. The point is that you do not have to remember to ask.
It asks before it acts. Reading, keeping lists, preparing a brief and writing a draft happen on their own. Anything that sends, pays or changes an account is named in one sentence, such as "Ready: send the revised quote from your email to your client", and then it waits. "Not yet" is a full answer, and it does not keep asking the same question in new words. More on that in how approval works.
Who does each one work for?
Our own answer is simple. When an assistant costs nothing, someone else is paying for what it learns about you. Concierge is paid for by its members, so its only job is working for them. There are no ads and your data is not for sale. That is a statement about Housefly; for how OpenAI handles your data, read OpenAI's own policies, which are the only reliable source.
The other part is memory. Each Housefly member has a sealed memory: the facts of their business and their taste in how things are written. When Housefly answers you, it is shown your box and nothing else, not another member's and not Drifted's own notes. The details are on the sealed memory page.
Is the price difference fair to compare?
Only if you compare like with like. A general chatbot plan is software you drive yourself. Housefly Concierge is a small, paid membership: ten founding seats, Solo at $3,000 a quarter and Operator at $6,000 a quarter, paid up front, with founding members keeping that price for life. In return, founding members give a five-minute feedback call each week. What separates Solo from Operator is not decided yet, and we would rather leave that blank than invent it.
If what you need is a general writing and research tool, a chatbot is far cheaper and probably the right call. Housefly only makes sense if keeping track of your business, with a team behind it for the jobs software cannot finish, is worth that price to you.
Can I use both?
Yes, and many owners probably would. Nothing about Housefly requires you to stop using another tool. A sensible split is a general chatbot for open-ended thinking and writing, and Housefly for the running lists of your own business: what you owe, what you are owed, and what is coming up next.
The easiest way to decide is to ask us directly. Joining starts with a 30-minute call; there is no payment link on the site, so you can ask anything before anything is paid.
Frequently asked questions
Is Housefly built on ChatGPT?
This site does not say which underlying model Housefly uses, so we will not claim one here. Ask on the 30-minute call if it matters to you.
Can Housefly answer general questions like a chatbot?
It is built to run a business, not to make conversation. For open-ended questions and writing, a general chatbot such as ChatGPT is the better tool.
Does Housefly message me first?
Yes. When a promise is about to slip or a call is coming up, it texts you before you think to ask.
Can Housefly send emails or pay for things on its own?
No. Anything that sends, pays or changes an account is named in one sentence and waits for your yes.
How much does Housefly cost compared with ChatGPT?
Housefly Concierge is $3,000 a quarter for Solo or $6,000 a quarter for Operator, paid up front. ChatGPT has a free tier and paid plans; check OpenAI for current prices.
